Mactan — the captain falls
27 April 1521. Magellan wades ashore at Mactan to subdue a local chief and is cut down in the surf — he never completes the loop he made possible. Command passes on; only one ship, the Victoria under Elcano, will limp home to Seville with 18 of the 270 who set out.
